Description
Offered is an amazing double shekel from Sidon in Phoenicia. Struck circa 401-366BC for Ba'alshallim II (386-372BC) on an irregular 32 X 26mm silver flan weighing 28gm. Purchased with confidence from Palmyraheritagegallery in 2015 and I will include the original listing and sales receipt. Obv. The war galley sailing left over waves on this side of the coin has been corroded or damaged as you can see but the incredible strike on the reverse goes a long way in making up for it. Rev. Persian king with his hand raised and a driver in a chariot drawn by two horses. Behind him is the King of Sidon standing left holding a scepter and a votive vase.The detail here is incredible with all the reins visible leading to the very detail horses,the chariot wheel is very detailed and some "mint luster" toning is still visible in several "protected" areas.
