    Description

Thanks for taking a look at my 440 BC Athens hemiobol. This silver coin was minted during Athens peak period ranging from 440 BC - 404 BC. It is around this time the Parthenon is completed atop the Acropolis. The silver to make the coinage of Ancient Greece came from the mines of Laurion about 35 kilometers southwest of Athens.
This is one of the best condition Athens hemiobols I have seen in the collecting world. The goddess Athena’s face, helmet, and crest are visible on the obverse and the owl, olive branch, and AOE inscription are visible on the reverse. The coin is encapsulated and graded VF by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC). Please message me with any questions!
    Obverse
Athena - goddess of wisdom, war, and crafts
    Reverse
Owl - Athena’s owl in Greek mythology, a symbol of wisdom and knowledge. Owl art decor would be found all over the city in ancient Athens.
AOE - alpha theta epsilon, abbreviation of AEONAION which means “Of the Athenians”
Olive branch - olive trees were a major resource for Athens
    Moon
